Travellers Rest Guest House is hosting a series of tailor-made culinary retreats that start on a Friday afternoon with checking in to one their luxurious, individually-styled double en-suite rooms, all of which lead off a separate communal living room with an open fire – perfect in a cool, country winter!

You can spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing in the garden or exploring the village, before meeting for drinks at 6pm in the lovely old colonial bar, followed by a delicious three-course evening meal with your fellow foodies.

Following breakfast on Saturday morning guests meet in the kitchen, where you will receive an apron and recipe folder. The cooking day begins with the art of bread making, followed by some delicious starters and easy entertaining ideas. After lunch, the focus is on the preparation of meat and fish dishes with a tutorial on fine sauces and vegetable preparations followed by dessert and hot soufflé making.

The full day’s cooking is designed to culminate in a three-course menu to be enjoyed that night in the restaurant. You’ll learn some “tricks of the trade” to ensure easy home entertaining and how to balance a menu for your future dinner parties. After dinner, enjoy a night cap in the lounge or bar before heading off to bed.

On Sunday you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast before check out (by 11am) or linger to enjoy a traditional Sunday roast.

The package includes two nights’ accommodation in a double room, two breakfasts, one lunch and two dinners, an apron and a folder with recipes and notes, as well as a day of cooking demonstrations and hands-on cooking. Wines & alcoholic beverages are extra. The cost is R2,450 per person.

Dates for 2012 are as follows, but if there are a minimum of four persons interested, Travellers Rest will arrange a retreat on any date to suit you.
