Ideas + Action = Engagement
For one day only, Saturday 13 October 2012, the global TEDx platform – including TEDxCapeTown – will harness the power of people across around the world to encourage them to create a TEDx event themed ‘City 2.0’. This day of urban inspiration will be hosted in various cities at favourite local spots, featuring the brightest local minds and biggest hearts.
This event is a result of the 2012 TED Prize – where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action. For the first time ever, the annual TED Prize went not to an individual, but to an idea on which our planet’s future depends: the City 2.0.
Since its launch in 2005, the TED Prize has been awarded to 17 individuals with bold ideas for change. And now, ‘City2.0’ is the 2012 winner, basking in the spotlight to collate, collect and create innovative ideas around urban transformation in our cities.
TEDxCapeTown is joining 60+ other cities across the world to address this issue on 13 October 2012, for a morning of urban inspiration to be held at Freeworld Design Centre Auditorium in Cape Town. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading combined with the desire to see more action, TEDxCapeTown has defined a simple approach to define the shape of their event: ‘Ideas + Action = Engagement’.
‘Ideas worth spreading’ will be shared by 8 speakers, each offering their city and urban inspiration ideas and insights, while ‘action worth spreading’ is a new concept initiated by TED to provide the opportunity for the the public to pre-submit an idea for urban transformation. Shortlisted ideas will then be coached to refine their pitch and on the day, the selected action pitches will be delivered in front of the TEDxCity2.0 audience – to inspire fellow citizens of Cape Town, and then engage them to request specific needs for support and skills, thus mobilising active citizenship!
One of TEDxCapeTown’s main strengths is the ability to connect and bring diverse groups of people together by building bridges across silos of expertise and passion. The ‘engagement worth spreading’ element will be in the form of the xLab, an innovative exhibition space, to showcase and engage with diverse inspirational projects, initiatives and ideas that are transforming Cape Town. This is an opportunity for you to showcase new solutions for the city and people of Cape Town, big solutions, simple solutions, with a focus on the innovative aspects
Applications for both the Action Pitches and xLab are open and the deadline is 28 September 2012.
Says Bernelle Verster, founder and curator of TEDxCapeTown, “We have been getting more and more requests to put TEDx to action, and people have expressed a clear and consistent need to get involved after they leave a TEDx event inspired. We hope to address this need. We’ve been talking about this in our strategic meetings too, so when TEDxCity2.0 and the Action Pitch came along, it was an appropriate time and vehicle to try it out!”
Confirmed speakers include Richard Palmer, a sustainability engineer who will speak on future cities and sustainability. The World Design Capital Director 2014, Richard Perez, will share his thoughts on design thinking related to cities. Marvin Benjamin of Siemens will talk about how big industry is making smart cities a reality, and we will also hear from Gail Jennings, a sustainable and non-motorised transport specialist. Other speakers can be found here.
TEDxCity2.0 is a chance for all of us to re-consider our cities and how we want them to be! How do you want your city to be? Design your city. Design your Cape Town.
