I have been with the Art of Living Foundation since 1998, and for the last 10 years, my wife Gerlinde and I have facilitated the fun-filled Art of Living Happiness Programme.

On this course you learn the powerful and unique Sudarshan Kriya breathing technique, which harmonises the body, mind and emotions. This technique has benefited millions across the world, and it silences the mind to such an extent that it eliminates stress, fatigue and negative emotions – the shift in consciousness leaves you calm yet energised, focused yet relaxed. In short, this programme allows you to experience a sustained happiness. In the last 10 years we have taught more than 7 000 participants the Happiness Programme.

I also teach the Art of Meditation course, where you learn to meditate by yourself in three short sessions.

The Art of Living Centre is located in the midst of the city, but is a haven of tranquillity to so many. The example of serenity in the midst of a busy city is apt as our participants learn how to remain calm, peaceful and happy despite the ups and downs of life.

At our centre we hold weekly free follow-up classes every Monday for those who have completed the Happiness Programme. On Thursdays at 19h00 we have free satsang, chanting and meditation sessions, which are also open to the public.

The founder of the Art of Living, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, said: “Smile and make others smile.” Service is a key aspect of spirituality and our vibrant volunteers have started several service projects. Every Tuesday at 17h30 volunteers run a soup kitchen outside Doppio Zero in St George’s Mall running through the city centre, where approximately 275 people are fed. They have started more feeding schemes and also adopted an orphanage and take care of more than 100 children.

Many tourists attend our courses. While drawn to the beauty of Cape Town, on our courses they experience the beauty within. Rest and happiness make a real holiday. Often people go on a holiday and they come back tired and tanned and needing a few more days to recuperate! A real holiday energises you and does not wear you out. Remember, nothing energises you like wisdom.
