Great South African train rides

It’s hard not to love travelling by train. The slow pace of travel, the soporific rattling along the tracks, the civility of travelling in a carriage where you can stretch your legs, order a drink and chat to a stranger. Pick one of these train experiences to go clickety-clack through South Africa.

South Africa’s train system has a poor reputation, often well deserved. But, while locals will largely tell you that travelling by train is impossible, foolhardy or dangerous – or perhaps all three – the truth is that with a little research and planning there are wonderful train trips to enjoy. And few better places to start them than the gleaming concourse at Cape Town Station.

Situated in the heart of the city centre, Cape Town station is a station of two faces. At one end, commuter lines fan out across the city. If you’re here on holiday, it’s the Southern Line you’re after. While the first few kilometres rattle through industrial areas and suburbs, after 40 minutes you reach perhaps the most beautiful stretch of commuter railway in the world. From Muizenberg to Simon’s Town the line runs right on the sea’s edge: bag a window seat and you can watch dolphins and whales as you rattle your way south.

Take your time here. Stop in Muizenberg for a surf lesson or a dip at this wonderfully multicultural beach. Hop off in Kalk Bay for a wander through the eclectic galleries and antique shops. Grab a bite at the delightful bistros and charming harbour side restaurants. Watch the fishing fleet come in and snap away at the colourful boats. One stop down the line, Fish Hoek has a delightful family-friendly beach, while Simon’s Town oozes nautical charm with a host of shops, museums and restaurants.

Back at Cape Town station, the country is waiting. Mainline overnight trains leave from platform 24, and which train you take depends on the size of your wallet. For just R690 Shosholoza Meyl will whisk you in a sleeper compartment to Johannesburg, revealing a 25-hour cross-section of South Africa en route.

One step up, Premier Classe throws in fine food, linen and more upmarket compartments; a fine way to head north for the next leg of your travels.

Or, splash out on Rovos Rail. This remarkable train offers Edwardian era charm and luxury on a three-day journey to Pretoria and beyond.

The famed Blue Train does similar, speeding through the night to deliver you to Johannesburg in just 24 hours.

All aboard?
