It’s a show filled with glitz, glamour and feather boas, performed by the Black Orchid Burlesque troupe, a five-course French style dinner, lots of wine, circus swing DJs playing into the night. In other words, a whole night’s worth of entertainment.

enjoy unique culinary experiences with the supper lounge

Supper Lounge is a social networking platform that allows you to network over dinner, meet new people and explore new restaurants, good food and good wines, while enjoying the company of other food lovers at one communal table.

On 26 July enjoy a private house dinner at Paradise Grey, a guesthouse in Higgovale, hosted by two very unusual and highly interesting Cape Town characters – Alan and Jason – who will entertain guests with plenty of interesting stories about their life in Cape Town. The 4-course fireside meal includes Vegetable cigars & Spinach rollades (selection of crunchy shredded seasonal vegetables, well-seasoned, tossed in butter &wrapped into cigarettes with phyllo pastry, and spinach served with dipping sweet chilli sauce), as well as Pesci a la Jason (line fish with a creamy mushroom garlic sauce, with stir fried seasonal vegetables and Basmati rice with crunchy brunoise of carrots &green beans). On 16 August get a new perspective at The Westin, Cape Town, while enjoying an exquisite 4-course dinner paired with wine, water, coffee and tea. Guests will start in the basement (boiler room) with canapés before heading to the kitchen for a chat with the chef to taste the starters. The main course will be served in the maintenance workshop of the hotel – between all kinds of technical tools & gadgets. the 29th knysna oyster festival kicks off on friday, 6 july

This year’s Knysna Oyster Festival takes place from 6 to 15 July, with events to tantalise all tastes. The festival really does have something for everyone: running, cycling and adventure racing, wine and whiskey tastings, cooking competitions, food and wine pairings, gala evenings, live music, a specialised children’s programme and oysters!

The festival’s two main sporting events, the Pick n Pay Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon and the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour gives participants the unique opportunity to run and cycle through the ancient indigenous forests of Knysna and experience the scenic beauty of the area.

And if marathons are not your style, there’s a full programme of adventure and soft sports for the whole family, including paddling, golf, bowls, soccer, night biking and angling.

Oyster-related events include the annual oyster-shucking competition, the ever-popular oyster eating competition and the Pick n Pay Oyster & Wine Mardi Gras – a fabulous evening of oysters and wine tasting.

Oyster Hotspots will be selling oysters in a variety of tastes and flavours at give-away prices!

The South African Navy, which always plays a huge part in the success of the Festival, will once again be visiting Knysna, making a grand entrance through the Knysna Heads in their huge minesweepers. And the Navy’s internationally acclaimed band will entertain festival-goers during the street parade and live concert at the Waterfront.

There’s a great programme for kids too – the Pick n Pay Young Oyster Festival includes youth theatre, puppet shows, creative art workshops and cooking courses. The Knysna Sport School Sports Fair will give kids the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of sports, free of charge.

creation wines celebrates 10 years with a sumptuous raclette lunch

In celebration of their 10th anniversary, Creation is hosting a sumptuous Raclette lunch on Sunday 15 July. Raclette, of course, originated in Switzerland and is a much loved tradition in that country. With good reason: it is a relaxed, interactive, fun and festive way of sharing a meal. (For interest sake, the name ‘Raclette’ comes from the French word ‘racler’ which means ‘to scrape’ and refers to the way the melted cheese is scraped off the grill.)

At Creation the authentic Raclette lunch involves half heads of specially imported cheese being melted under a huge grill. The deliciously bubbling result is then served with steamed new potatoes, crunchy pickled Italian-style vegetables, delectable prosciutto and spices – a truly irresistible combination! Their terrific wines will enhance the pleasure while a blazing fire will add to the hearty welcome.

a good laugh from bay harbour market

Charlie Chaplin once said “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” And Bay Harbour is definitely not wasting Wednesday 1st August 2012 when the inaugural Bay Harbour Comedy Supper Club showcases three of South Africa’s favourite comedians: Marc Lottering, Mum-z and Rob van Vuuren.

We know that “laughter is brightest, in the place where the food is” so all the usual food traders will open from 6pm for show-goers to enjoy a mouth-watering supper prior to and during the show. The Boom Bar, which will serve a full spectrum of wine, spirits and the largest selection of draught beer in Cape Town, will also open. And, of course, the huge fireplace, one of the signatures of Bay Harbour, which will be roaring.

Says Bay Harbour co-founder, Anthony Stroebel: “We are excited to extend the Bay Harbour brand into comedy – it was always part of our vision to offer a broad variety of entertainment on the Bay Harbour stage and, in so doing, ensure that we have a platform for emerging artists of all kinds to present their talents to an appreciative audience. The unique venue and ambience are sure to provide something quite special.”

In line with their vision of supporting the local community, Bay Harbour will be donating all proceeds from the show to Hout Bay CARES a sustainable community project working with people in Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu struck by poverty and drug-abuse. HOUT BAY C.A.R.E.S stands for Community Awareness Rehabilitation Education Service and is managed by Non-Profit Organisation, FavorSA.. Viola, Queen of the Bay, will be there in all her glory helping collect funds, as she has been doing on behalf of CARES for the past several months.

Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 7.30pm – early bird tickets cost R60 and are available from the Boom Bar at Bay Harbour Market during normal trading hours from Friday 13 July, otherwise R70 at the door. Make sure you get there early as seating is limited to 200 people, although there will be plenty of standing room.

The upcoming Veggie Buntch Supper club features a very exciting and unusual plant-based menu with local and international flavours at Tobago’s restaurant at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cape Town.
