win tickets to the graeme watkins project at mercury live

From The Graeme Watkins Project Facebook page:

12 Months ago, the world was pretty “safe” – the economy was still in tact, the future was bright and in SA Music, Season 5 of Idols was in full swing. Little did we all realise that someone, and something, special was being unearthed – Graeme Watkins.

Graeme has since teamed up with some of the most highly regarded and accomplished musicians in South African music to create his new initiative – The Graeme Watkins Project (GWP). Ryno Zeelie plays Lead Guitarist (famed for playing with Danny K, We Will Rock You and Rent); Rudo Pieterse on Bass (having played for Karen Zoid, amongst others) and Matthew Marinus on drums (notorious for his work in Fevertree, Zebra & Giraffe and Skouspel shows).

Despite being a simple “3-piece band”, GWP produces one of the biggest sounds around. GWP brings a dirty, edgy, rough approach to a medley of pop, indie, rock and electronic genres.

Channelling influences such as “The Springbok Nude girls”, “Boo!”, “The Killers” and even a hint of “Depeche Mode”, this unique sound is bound to inject a splice of energy into every listener. With the ADHD inspired beat, the music is designed to get the crowd into the mad-capped mindset of the band members, to break out of their comfort zone and rock out to the all-encompassing movement of the melody.

This unit has managed to break the “cookie-cutter” mould of stereotypically SA Pop-Rock by producing a handful of fresh, new original tracks – each lined with raw, pure emotion … pretty much exactly what everyone, not only the SA Music scene, desperately needs right now.”

The Graeme Watkins Project Cape Town Tour includes a performance at Mercury Live in Zonnebloem this Friday, 5 August along with supporting act Kill Disco and Brothers Streep. See Facebook for details of prices, times & specials.

We have four tickets to giveaway. Simple Like B-guided on Facebook and leave a comment that includes the words ‘GWP’ or ‘Watkins’ before noon on Thursday. We’ll contact you late Thursday to let you know if you’ve won.

simple meanings with li edelkoort

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, Li Edelkoort has had to cancel her trip to Cape Town.

This spring, trend forecaster Li Edelkoort encourages us to take a moment and consider the world around us and embrace life, in all its colourful facets.

Design Indaba is pleased to announce a Trend Union Seminar, “Bliss”, presented by Li Edelkoort taking place at the Pavilion Conference Centre in Cape Town on Thursday 29 September 2011. At R950 a ticket, this includes:

Looking to summer and lifestyle trends, Edelkoort will explore the major movements that will characterise the next couple of months. What are we wearing? How are we socialising? And how are we relating to the world around us in a time when a renewed respect for the natural world is crucial.

Edelkoort will be looking to these questions in what she describes as a happy moment of being together and sharing. She will present an audiovisual experience that promises to engage you on more than one level, looking at summer styles and trends in fashion, décor and lifestyle.

Understanding the complexities of life today, Edelkoort will also address the human need to simply breathe and live, and the search for new identities. It’s about filling life with meaning, and gaining a new respect for the wonder of life and how to go about achieving this through our consumer choices.

Edelkoort says: “We will aspire to a time out of time, we will search for a world within a world, a space of daydreams and wonder. A moment to experience simply being there. Something to be grateful for. To enjoy the moment.”

This three-hour event starts at 13:30 on Thursday 29 September and places are limited, so be sure to book your place at Computicket now.
