curry club at gusto cafeteria

Gusto Cafeteria is the quirky spot in Hatfield Street where Melisa and Tom and their team serve up breakfast, brunch, sandwiches, buffets and soul food.

Gusto also has a monthly supper club that should not be missed. Last month’s menu, for instance, included fresh pasta and slowly roasted (for seven hours!) lamb shoulder. Seven hour lamb shoulder. Oh, my!

This month is Curry Club, where you’ll be able to enjoy truly authentic, aromatic Indian cuisine from all India’s culinary regions. How authentic? Melisa told me that she will be creating dishes from cooking guru Pushpesh Pant’s India. Paired with the food will be Porcupine Quills Karoo Red craft beer and a 2007 Cranefields Overberg Shiraz.

Curry Club costs R300 per person, including the beer and wine pairing and the evening starts at 7:30pm.

The full menu can be found here and while you’re there, click the subscribe button on the top left corner to make sure you get all the details about future supper club events.

And if you’re keen to pop in for breakfast or lunch, keep an eye on their Facebook page; the menu changes daily.

diner vibes at the new brewhoo

New owners of Brewhoo, Carmen and Mark, have great plans in store for this diner style cafe on the corner of the Woodstock Foundry. Some changes have been made while others continue, all with the aim of transforming Brewhoo in a into a laid back, community hangout, where customers are friends and feel comfy enough to spend hours sipping a cup of coffee on their couch. We love places that let us linger!

The breakfast menu, which is served all day (thank you!), includes the traditional bacon & eggs, albeit with a slight twist, but we have our eye on the “Blame Canada”, French toast with strawberries, blueberries and maple syrup accompanied by a lemon and rocket salad. Bacon can be added. And it will. For when a little less indulgence is required, homemade honey and vanilla granola with plain yoghurt and fresh fruit is the way to go.

There’s also toasted sarmies served with salad or fries, soup of the day, salads, tacos, nachos, burgers, pasta and pizza. The Woodstock pizza – butternut, feta and toasted almonds – sounds quite sublime. The full, updated menu can be downloaded [here] and it is well worth following them on Facebook and Twitter for updates and specials.

Also planned are fun events like #FridayNightLive, which kicks off this Friday with Jonny Bud (better known as Nic Gaud from Seventh Son). It will be a chilled out event with beer, kiff tunes and friends. Jonny Bud is Nic’s new solo project: a collection of story telling camp fire acoustic rhythms with folk reggae undertones and social/political commentary. Find the Facebook event here

Back for the summer season (October 2014 to March 2015) by popular demand is the monthly Astronomy Gastronomy, where you will be treated to a sunset dinner in the light and airy Café Grill before embarking on a starry journey to the hotel’s unique outdoor events space, ‘The Kraal’, accompanied by the astronomy experts of Over the Moon Tours.

The 3-course menu offers mouth-watering choices such as Executive Chef Christo Pretorius’ starter dish of Prawn Dhal with cauliflower, pickled cucumber, sultanas, coriander yoghurt and mango chutney, and the famous Vanilla Crème brûlée as dessert. Named one of eight WWFSASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) Trailblazers at this year’s SASSI Seafood Circle Awards, Pretorius is an enthusiastic fisherman himself. He loves working with green listed, sustainable fish such as hake, farmed cob, monk, pole caught yellowfin tuna, salmon trout and dorado to create his delicious Fresh Catch of the Day as main course, served with dill pancake, Malay spiced butternut, mung beans, confit baby fennel and curried velouté.

After dinner guests will walk up the path to The Kraal via the hotel’s fragrant herb garden, passing ancient Milkwood trees and taking in Table Mountain’s magnificent flora. During the 1.5 hour stargazing experience on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles the astronomer will enlighten guests on the spellbinding stars in the Southern Hemisphere – a professional telescope allowing for a close-up look at the Milky Way. Thanks to the unique seaside and mountain location of The Twelve Apostles Hotel there is minimal light pollution, making for spectacular night skies.

trinity evolves into multi-functional venue and event space

Trinity (as it was previously known), has evolved into a multifunctional events venue making up part of the newly developed Bennett Street Complex, now comprised of Trinity Funktion & Gold Restaurant, which operate independently yet complementally. This exclusive hospitality venue for hire is like no other and offers a varied space and full stable of services to create the ultimate event,

Trinity Funktion has hosted a multitude of successful and diverse functions from nightlife events and corporate functions to film shoots and fashion shows. It has all the urban decadence you could expect, combining ‘unrestrained opulence with a distinct, progressive and modern approach’. There is vast scope in terms of décor and mood, due to the multi-level configuration of the space.

Named after its impressive ‘Funktion One’ sound system, Trinity Funktion boasts a Mezzanine & Salon Prive with Cape Town’s most state-of-the-art lighting and sound experience. With the added bonuses of the motorised projection screen, 7-metre stage and authentic Indian temple doors, this ‘Funktion’ space can easily be used as the platform for events and brand activations alike.

The Salon Privé is opulent: plush carpeting, deep armchairs, ottomans and leather bar seats are all reflected on the ceiling by angled mirrors lining the entire area. There is also a Rooftop Garden for mingling amongst the vertically-planted foliage.
