The Mother City is famous for her beautiful beaches and pristine blue waters, though they may be cold they are exquisitely perfect for great activities such as wind surfing, surfing, body boarding and all round water sports. Bloubergstrand is a pebbled pleasure with snow white sand and deep cobalt blue sea, as well as having the most exhilirating views of the majestic Table Mountain as its main backdrop.
Only 15km drive from the City Bowl, Bloubergstrand beach is a well loved destination for locals and tourists alike. Even though Great White Sharks have been sighted it is a safe surfing and water sport area, of recent kite boarding has taken off in the area, there is a fantastic kite shop called Cabrinha, where the novice to the very experienced can get all geared up and try out the famous ‘Cape Doctor’. The beach falls within a marine nature reserve area, Cape Rock lobster and abalone are strictly prohibited from being removed. Occasionally killer whales and humpback whales are sighted as well as the commonly spotted Cape fur seals.
A little bit of history regarding the beach, in the late 1940’s, Helena ‘Mollie’ Lochner who was a well known writer and illustrator of Afrikaans childrens books lived at the end of Stadler road in what was known as ‘Die Groot Withuis’ or more prestigiously ‘Lochner House’. She frequented the beach very often, after her death her house was donated to the South African Teachers Union but was demolished due to the high cost in 2004. Before the house was demolished a lady by the name of Heather Bam lived in the house, unfortunately she drowned off the point and a large cross monument was erected in her name, it stands at the end of Blouberg Beach.
Out of all the beaches in Cape Town, Blouberg Beach which was once known as a ‘white only beach’ during the Apartheid era is truly one of the most visited and most enjoyed beaches. Along the beachfront are great places to visit and enjoy sundowners with an epic view of the grand Table Mountain. The Blue Peter Hotel is on the beachfront and is very well known for delicious pizzas and divine cocktails, it is a famous local hangout and loved by many. There is also a fantastic mall called Eden on the Bay, which provides a fabulous shopping experience as well as safer swimming and water sports as the lifeguards have their station right where the mall is situated.
